On a Lighter Note...

...I hoping to keep the blog a fun and exciting chronicle of our trip but I guess Derek had other ideas. Anyway...

I'm writing you this entry from Paris, France on the close of a very long day. When I say long, I mean long! I haven't had any decent sleep since before our flight left PDX on Thursday morning, and it's already late Friday / early Saturday here in Paris. Why no quality sleep? Well the time change certainly has something to do with it, but we've been traveling almost non-stop.

Our flight from the U.S. landed in Frankfurt this morning and once we finished up customs we had to catch a commuter rail to the main rail station in town, Frankfurt Hbf. Now let me just say this now, I've heard about how far ahead of the states Europe is when it comes to rail transportation, but seeing this first hand sealed the deal. They know how to do trains here!

Here's the caveat: when things go wrong with the trains, organization quickly breaks down; case-in-point our trip from Frankfurt Hbf to Paris Est. We rode the ICE train out of Frankfurt destinated for Paris, with no transfer necessary. Shortly after boarding the train however, we were informed that this train would not be able to continue beyond Saarbrücken to Paris because of "technical difficulties." They informed us our train at Saarbrücken would be waiting for us at the station - simple transfer, no biggie...except!...

...To make a long story short, there was no transfer train and we ended up stuck at Saarbrücken Hbf along with a ton of other confused people. Even the people at DE Bahn were confused! At one point we were basically told, "forget about going to Paris today." But I'm writing you from Paris, so we did getting out of there by barely catching a full TGV to Paris after nearly five hours of uncertainty.

Commuting wasn't over when we reached Paris. Our hotel is near the Eiffel Tower, which is way out of walking distance, especially when there are six people with luggage and it's 22:00 on a Friday night. So we hopped on the city bus line (no. 42 if you're interested) and actually got a great tour of Paris - parts you normally would never see as a tourist.

You know, I'm getting bored typing this and you're probably bored reading it so I'll stop here. I'm actually really looking forward to a good night's sleep - I'm SO tired.

Don't worry! Pictures will be coming, I'm just way too tired to type or do anything more.

Wonderful! Everything I love about travel! Being removed from one's routine and creature comforts at home, the chance to come closer to understanding Murphy's Law,the utter inability to keep a fixed schedule. Travel truly makes one appreciate the finer things in life such as... a warm croisant after an all-night train ride, the joy of a horizontal bed (as opposed to a airplane or train seat), and especially the extra pair of microfiber undies you packed in your carry on just in case. I Love travel!
